I always knew that LED's are the next big thing in cinematography, and that they will eventually replace many lights as we know them. LED's had to came a long way though; They used to have bad CRI and CC, they were expensive and soft (because you would need many leds to get some power, many leds = big surface = soft light only).

But they have tones of advantages, they have extraordinary lumen per watt, they last long (very long), they don't get hot, they are durable, with new leds color temperature can be changed on the fly, they can be dimmed without changing color temperature and oh yes, they come in Fresnels as well ;).

Litepanels introduced three new LED Fresnels called "Solas" they are supposed to have 1/3 of the weight of an HMI and twice as much lm/W, they have an DMX interface, they don't need a ballast and I think you can change the color temperature on them as well. They are even supposed to be cheaper then HMI's. If this is true I'll call this "a game changer!".

Solas are available in three models:

Size: 4”x4”x5"
(102mm x 102mm x 127mm)
Weight: 10 ounces (.28 kg)
Fresnel lens: 3 inch (7.62cm)
Power: 30W (equiv. to 250W tungsten)
Power Requirement: 10-20VDC

Size: 6”x 7” x 9”
(152mm x 178mm x 229mm)
Weight: 6 lbs. (2.7 kg)
Fresnel lens: 6 inch (15.24cm)
Power: 75W (equiv. to 650W tungsten)
Power Supply: internal universal PFC 85-245VAC

Size: 13”x12”x15”
(330mm x 305mm x 381mm)
